To give of one’s self: to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived…this is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson
There is a big mix out there, and there are lots of different things going on, and there is not one way that was intended to be the right way. Just like there's not one color or one flower or one vegetable or one fingerprint. There is not one that is to be the right one over all others. The variety is what fosters the creativity. And so you say, "Okay, I accept that there's lots of variety, but I don't like to eat cucumbers." Don't eat cucumbers. But don't ask them to be eliminated and don't condemn those who eat them. Don't stand on corners waving signs trying to outlaw the things that you don't like. Don't ruin your life by pushing against. Instead, say, "I choose this instead. This does please me. --- Abraham (Excerpted from the workshop in

An investigation of city computers found that dozens of employees frequented pornographic Web sites at work and clicked on thousands of images, the mayor said Wednesday.
As many as nine district workers from various agencies, including the Child and Family Services Agency, will be fired after an internal investigation found that each had clicked on porn images more than 19,000 times last year, Mayor Adrian Fenty said.
An additional 32 employees who each visited porn sites more than 2,000 times last year will be suspended or reprimanded, he said.
The investigation did not reveal any evidence of child pornography, said acting D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles.
The probe of 10,000 city computers was launched last month after the city received a complaint from an employee about other workers browsing and downloading pornographic content on government computers. Officials eventually uncovered abuse at 18 agencies.
The city has installed filtering software on its computers that is supposed to block access to porn sites and display a message informing the user of the city's Internet policy.
Virulent strains of HippiesMany of the original Hippies are still around and have proven to be extremely difficult to control, even after decades of effort
Once infected, a community may never be able to completely eradicate Hippies, especially in light of the new resistant strains.
Hippies can survive in a community for decades, only to reappear when stimulated by a liberal protest or music festival.
Even when Hippies are in remission we must always remember that they can re-appear, even after decades of dormancy.
Merry Christmas!
While the big shops put up enormous wreaths and the little shops spray on the Santa Snow window stencils, churches iron out the creases on the Put Christ Back Into Christmas posters for the glass cases on the street front. Their struggle is not new.
The Church, or at least Cromwell's puritan Commonwealth, tried to stamp out Christmas, all feast days and anything fun more than three centuries ago.
A tract author with the central casting-puritan name of Hezekiah Woodward wrote, in 1656: The old heathens' Feasting Day, in honour of Saturn, their Idol-God, the Papists' Massing Day, the Profane Man's Ranting Day, the Superstitious Man's Idol Day, the Multitudes' Idle Day, Satan's – that Adversary's – Working Day, the True Christian Man's Fasting Day ... The fact is, old Hezekiah Woodward, in part, made a pretty fair point. Christmas was, indeed, in its origins a heathen day of feasting for Saturn. And Baal. And Mithras. Christmas, ironically, antedates the Nativity of Christ, and December 25 is a fudge. In the third century CE the Church fathers chose that day as Jesus Christ's birthday, with good reason. It happens to fall approximately on the Northern Hemisphere's Winter Solstice, and December 25 (Midwinter's Day/Winter Solstice/Yule) has been from time immemorial a day sacred to the rebirth of the light of the sun in the depths of winter. This day was the Festival of Natalis Sol Invictus (the Birth of the Undefeated Sun) in ancient Rome. Ancient peoples also commemorated the Babylonian Queen of Heaven, Osiris in Egypt, Dionysus, Helios, Adonis, the Celtic horned god Cernunnos, the Syrian Baal, Attis, Mithras, Balder and the Norse god Frey – all celebrated on the ancient Winter Solstice, and mostly solar saviours and dying gods. Most of these deities were given similar titles: the Light of the World, Sun of Righteousness, and Saviour. (More on ancient Gods and saviours similar to Jesus.)
In astronomy, the solstice is either of the two times a year when the Sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator, the great circle on the celestial sphere that is on the same plane as the earth's equator. In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs either December 21 or 22, when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn; the summer solstice occurs either June 21 or 22, when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Cancer. In the Southern Hemisphere, the winter and summer solstices are reversed.
The reason for the different seasons at opposite times of the year in the two hemispheres is that while the earth rotates about the sun, it also spins on its axis, which is tilted some 23.5 degrees towards the plane of its rotation. Because of this tilt, the Northern Hemisphere receives less direct sunlight (creating winter) while the Southern Hemisphere receives more direct sunlight (creating summer). As the Earth continues its orbit the hemisphere that is angled closest to the sun changes and the seasons are reversed.
In ancient days the folk of old
When chilled with fright by winter's cold
Did kindle up a great Yule fire
With leaping flames in its great pyre;
So to entice the waning sun
To rise again and wider run;
It's fiery course across the sky,
To warm them so they would not die.
So we, whose minds now sense a chill
Of anger in the evil will,
The human conflict, hate, and strife,
Which hold a menace over life;
Would kindle up a flame of love
That we within our hearts may move,
In Yuletide joy, with love embrace
And thus abide in peace and grace.

Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606), was a member of a group of English Roman Catholics who attempted to carry out the Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I of England, to destroy Protestant rule by killing the Protestant aristocracy, on 5 November 1605..
Sir William Wade, Lieutenant of the Tower of London at this time, supervised the torture and obtained Fawkes's confession. For three or four days Fawkes said nothing, let alone divulge the names of his co-conspirators. Only when he found out that they had proclaimed themselves by appearing in arms did he succumb. The torture only revealed the names of those conspirators who were already dead or whose names were known to the authorities. Some had fled to Dunchurch, Warwickshire, where they were killed or captured. On 31 January, Fawkes and a number of others implicated in the conspiracy were tried in Westminster Hall. After being found guilty, they were taken to Old Palace Yard in Westminster and St Paul's Yard, where they were hanged, drawn, and quartered. Fawkes, however, managed to avoid the worst of this execution by jumping from the scaffold where he was supposed to be hanged, breaking his neck before he could be drawn and quartered ("The King's Book.",1606.)
T.S. Eliot makes reference to Guy Fawkes in his 1925 poem The Hollow Men.
On John Lennon's 1970 solo album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Lennon sings "Remember, remember, the 5th of November" on the song "Remember". The lyrics are followed by the sound of an explosion.
Nursery Rhyme
Most British children learn the nursery rhyme about the plot when they are very young. This is how it goes:
| Remember, remember the fifth of November, |
"The only human codes which are right are those based in universalmorals. For example, it is against human law to physically attackanother person. The man who does so, may or may not be caught andpunished by the court, but he is always punished on the spot by him-self, whether aware of it or not. We may escape human laws, but neverthe laws of our own nature." Pathways to Perfect Living…Vernon Howard
Now that I am old, let me rest a spell
All that I am told, I can never tell
Never in my life, never will it pass
I am still alone, remembering at last
Once upon a time, once upon a day when
I was in my prime, once along the way
Tammy Cox is being consumed by flesh-eating bacteria. The Florida mother is in a medically induced coma at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where WKMG-TV says doctors are soaking her body in raw bleach in the hope that this will kill the deadly bacteria.
"It just kept eating away at her," Cindy Cox, her sister, said. "So, they kept taking more and more and her whole backside is gone."
No one knows how she contracted the infection, the station says. The prognosis isn't good. One out of four people with necrotizing fasciitis (nek-roe-tie-zing fah-shee-eyetis) doesn't make it. If the bleach works, doctors say Cox will spend six months in the hospital and undergo at least 18 surgeries.
How often are people infected with this bacteria? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there were about 600 cases reported in 1999.
WKMG-TV has photos of Cox. (You may find them too graphic.)
We told you in July about the Texas man who became infected with flesh-eating bacteria while swimming off the coast of Texas.

GREENE COUNTY TN (WATE) -- Local and state officers have cleared a Greene County marijuana field worth an estimated $1 million on the street.
One of four armed suspects guarding the large field is custody. Three other suspects are still at large.
Officers estimate there are between 8,000 and 12,000 plants that range in height from 5' to 14'.
The field is 50 to 75 yards wide and between 600 to 700 yards long.
A farmer found the plants and told authorities.
Then a state Highway Patrol helicopter pilot helped Drug Task Force officers spot the field and find the suspect who was caught.

The top e-mailed story from the Los Angeles Times website today was "Mythical Chupacabra Found in Texas?"
Some of us know exactly what a chupacabra is thanks to a 1997 X-Files episode "El Mundo Gira." Sort of: It's a creature that supposedly either looks like a weird wild dog or a lizard-like alien.
First reported in Puerto Rico, there've been spottings in Mexico and the U.S. The name translates to "goat sucker," and it supposedly sucks the blood of the animals it kills, through two little puncture marks.
So the folks in Cuero, Texas, are having a field day with the roadkill chupacabra that Phylis Canion supposedly found last month. She's even begun selling $5 t-shirts declaring "2007, The Summer of the Chupacabra, Cuero, Texas." Phylis has even saved the head of the creature for DNA testing and mounting on her trophy wall. (We guess there's not much else going on in Cuero, huh?)
But to really get down to solving the mystery of the chupacabra, we think we need to bring Mulder and Scully out of retirement.
The airline said that after Sunday's ceremony the plane successfully completed a flight to Hong Kong.
"The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights," senior airline official Raju KC was quoted as saying by Reuters.
